After a turbulent start to the week marked by 77 storm‑related emergency responses between Sunday and Monday, weather conditions across Styria and much of Austria are set to calm — and then warm — noticeably in the days ahead.

Localised thunderstorms like the intense cell over Mautern, which forced the evacuation of the town’s wildlife park, are not expected at the beginning of the week, though meteorologists caution they cannot be entirely ruled out. Monday afternoon will remain unsettled with intermittent rain, and daytime highs will hover around 23°C, with Köflach briefly topping the charts at 23.4°C, making it Styria’s warmest spot.

A Dry and Warmer Tuesday Ahead

Overnight into Tuesday, rainfall will gradually subside. Where clouds break, temperatures could climb to 27°C during the day.
Meteorologist Martin Kulmer describes Tuesday as “a dry day with several hours of sunshine” — a welcome shift after the unsettled weekend.

Midweek Dip Before the Holiday Warmth

Wednesday will bring a noticeable cooldown. According to Geosphere Austria, rain is expected particularly in the western Upper Styrian regions.

But just in time for the public holiday on Thursday, summer returns:

  • Around 26°C expected in many districts
  • Mostly sunny conditions
  • Showers likely only in the evening in Upper Styria, according to UWZ

Kulmer adds that Friday is likely to be rather wet, continuing the week’s weather rollercoaster.

Weekend Outlook: Still Uncertain

Forecast models for the weekend remain inconsistent. One scenario suggests that a high‑pressure system could establish itself over the region, bringing more stable and warmer conditions — but confidence is still low.

May 2026: One of the Sunniest in 15 Years

Looking back, May 2026 was exceptional. It ranked as the fifth‑sunniest May since records began, delivering 26% more sunshine than the 1991–2020 climate average.
Only May 2011 was brighter, with a remarkable 34% increase.

Regions with the strongest anomalies — between 25% and 50% above average — included:

  • Vorarlberg
  • Northern Tirol
  • Higher Alpine areas
  • Salzburg north of the Salzach
  • Upper Austria
  • Western Lower Austria
  • Large parts of Styria

These figures underline a continuing trend toward sunnier, warmer late‑spring conditions across Austria.
